While adding that the FederalGovernment attractive reward would beunprecedented in the historyof the Games, the minister, said: “Let me inform you that the Team Nigeria’s preparation for the 2012 London Olympic received a big boost on Friday. The Federal Government has released about N1.9 billion tothe Sports Commission to enhance our preparation ahead of the Games. “As part of our arrangements to compete favourably, we would be giving special incentives to the athletes who distinguish themselves in the Games. I can assure you that the quality of the incentives which would serve as a boost to the athletes is unprecedented in the historyof Nigeria participation in theGames,” the Minister promised. Recently, the minister had lamented that the non-release of the budget and funds generally was posing a serious challenge on the preparation for the Games, even as he said that the Commission had gone outof its way to source for funds. In his words: “Definitely, funding is a major challenge for the preparations for the Olympics. But, we keep creating strategies to ensurethat we are on ground. Our athletes are scattered in every part of the world and in Nigeria. “Despite this challenge we face and the limitations of funding, we still continue to create opportunities for themand I must commend the federation chairmen, especially the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN) who have been looking for various ways to ensure that the machine of preparation keeps rolling. “If we had continued to wait for funding until this time, less that 100 days to the Olympic, definitely we cannot expect any result. So, we are not waiting because we have continued to try the best, even though it was not an ideal situation, to ensure that Team Nigerianget a good outing in the Olympics,” he noted
