Democracy day 2012



The President yesterday lamented the intrigues between the executive and legislative arms of government which he said are affecting delivery of dividends of democracy Also,Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, decried non-assent of many bills passed by the National Assembly even as Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former scribe of the Commonwealth, warned elected office holders to put the 2015 elections on the back burners and concentrate on empowering the electorate economically. The trio and others spoke atthe Democracy Day national symposium held at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja. Chief Anyaoku chaired the event themed: “Our democracy: Progress and challenge”. President Jonathan who said Nigeria has cause to celebrate 13 years of stable democracy, noted that the worst democratic governmentwas better than a dictatorial government because “we have a tenure and democratic government givesa little more elastic for peopleto criticize government, that is why people believe that the worse democratic government is better than a dictatorial dispensation”. He said the non-cooperation of the executive and the legislature on the issue of government policies despite the fact that majority of the National Assembly members were from the same Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), leaves room for opposition tocontinue to gain ground.
