FCT, Oyo NMA call for reinstatement of sacked doctors
.
Medical doctors in the Federal Capital Territory and Oyo State have called for the immediate reinstatement of the 788 doctors sacked by the Lagos State Government. The doctors, acting under the aegis of the Nigeria Medical Association, in two separate meetings with journalists in Abuja and Ibadan on Friday, requested the Babatunde Fashola Administration to implement the agreement reached with the Medical Guild on March 24, 2011. The chairman of the FCT branch of the NMA, Dr. Nicholas Baamlong, faulted what he described as the ‘graveyard silence’ of the Lagos State House of Assembly on the issue. Baamlong said, “The Lagos State Government should unconditionally recall and reinstate all sacked doctorswithin the shortest possibletime. “The government should implement the agreement reached with Medical Guild without any disadvantage or loss of level or grade to any doctor.” While Baamlong urged the Presidency, the National Assembly and the Ministry of Health, as well as the Ministry of Labour to intervene in the matter so as to avoid a breakdown ofhealth services in the country, his colleagues in Oyo threatened to embark on a solidarity strike if the sacked Lagos doctors were not recalled. The chairman of the Oyo branch of the NMA, Prof. Millicent Obajimi, who was represented by the vice-chairman of the association, Dr. Muideen Olatunji, described the action of the Lagos State Government as hasty, cruel, insensitive and thoughtless.
Obajimi said, “The entire membership of the NMA in Oyo State hereby decry this rape on democracy in LagosState and totally condemn this action of the Lagos State Government in its entirety.” The Lagos doctors were reportedly sacked for protesting against the refusal of the state government to grant their request for improved remuneration and welfare.
