Boko Haram has killed more Muslims – Ningi

Deputy Majority Leader of the Senate, Abdul Ningi, hasdispelled the belief that Boko Haram is an Islamic sect whose goal is to kill Christians in the country. Ningi, who spoke to our correspondent in Uyo, venue of the Senate Retreat on Tuesday, said the violent group had not been selective in their targets, saying many Muslims, including his uncle,had been killed by Boko Haram. He said, “I am a victim of Boko Haram. My uncle was killed by the sect; he was a former Deputy Inspector-General of Police. “So, if people are saying that because you are Hausa, Muslim or a northerner and that you are in sympathy with the activities of the sect, I will say it is not true. “If it is true that we are in sympathy with the sect, howcome the statistics on the ground shows that more Muslims have been killed in the attacks by the sect thanthe Christians?” The lawmaker added, “What we as senators fromthe North should do at this retreat is to make our southern counterparts know that the Boko Haram has a different belief from other muslims. What they preach and do is beyond our understanding and conclusion. This sect is more dangerous than any security agencies by going after those who talk againstthem.” Meanwhile, the Action Congress of Nigeria National Chairman, Chief BisiAkande, hailed the retreat, saying it was capable proffering solutions to the lingering security challenges in the country.

Boko Haram: ACF, ex-police chiefs reject state police

The northern socio-politicalgroup, the Arewa Consultative Forum, and some ex- police chiefs on Tuesday rejected the Nigeria Governors’ Forum’sdemand for state police. They described creation of state police as an invitationto chaos. But the Action Congress of Nigeria has backed the NGF, saying security in the country should be decentralised. The National Assembly has however said that the possibility of state police will be part of its constitution review. Chairman, Senate Committeeon Information and Media, Enyinnaya Abaribe, on Tuesday told one of our correspondents in Uyo that every option that could enhance security would be considered. “All options to enhance the security of Nigeria, including state police, are tobe considered in the constitution amendment,” hesaid. The ACF National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Anthony Sani, said the group did notback the NGF’s demand for state police, and urged President Goodluck Jonathan to pursue the option of dialogue with the north-based violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram. “In a clime where democracyhas yet to develop, state police would enable the state governors to use policemen to cause havoc for their opponents, reminiscent of how they used their state electoral commissions to conquer andvanquish the opponents at state level, leading to sluggish development,” Sani said. He advised Jonathan to hold talks with Boko Haram, arguing that an attempt by the late President Umaru Yar’Adua to use force against the sect members did not succeed. He said thelate President killed “hundreds of Boko Haram members, including their leader.” Also, a former Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Sunday Ehindero, warned that the creation of state police would lead to the eventual disintegration of Nigeria. Ehindero, who spoke in PortHarcourt, Rivers State, argued that allowing the states to control the police would lead to anarchy because of existing issues among some states and regions in the country.

67-year-old man accused of impregnating girl, 14

A 67-year-old man, Ahmed Atanda, who lives at Oke-Adi area of Sango, Ilorin, Kwara State has allegedly impregnated a 14-year-old girl (name withheld) in the same neighbourhood. Atanda, a driver and divorcee father of two, allegedly lured the girl to anuncompleted building at a nearby well at Sango area and allegedly had carnal knowledge of her. The girl’s mother, Hadijat Saliu, told journalists in Ilorin on Monday that she had sent her daughter to fetch water at a nearby wellon Thursday morning. Saliu said when the girl did not return on time, she asked her elder sister to fetch her. She said on getting there, the girl’s elder sister met Atanda making love to the teenager and quickly rushed back home to informher. Saliu said she immediately left for the place and still met the man making love to the 14-year-old girl. She said when she could nolonger bear it, she tapped the man on the shoulder, adding that the man quickly jumped up while naked. Saliu added that a doctor had confirmed that her daughter was pregnant. Our correspondent gathered that Atanda and the teenager had been regularly having intercourse for a while. Saliu said, “It is true. I met him on top of my daughter and I tapped him to get up from her. We have gone to a hospital and a doctor confirmed that my daughter is pregnant. “I sent my daughter to go and fetch water. When she did not come back on time, I sent her sister to fetch her. Her sister came back to inform me that an old man was making love to my daughter. So, I went there and saw things from myself.” The victim also acknowledged that Atanda had made love to her. But Atanda denied having any sexual relationship withthe girl, alleging that he was being framed up. He stated that he had gone to fetch dogonyaro leaves when the girl beckoned him to assist him lift her bucket of water. He added that he was takenaback when a woman raisedthe alarm and alleged that he was making love to her daughter
Atanda said, “On that day, Iwas just passing by to collect cashew and dogonyaro leaves to treat myself. The girl said I should help her lift her bucket of water she fetchedfrom the well. In the process, I heard one womanshout, ‘Everyone come oo! Come oh! He is raping my daughter. “I did not have canal knowledge of her because I had an operation near my private part and I cannot have sexual intercourse now.” The Division Police Officer, Kulende Police Station, Mr. Aminu Abdullahi, on Monday confirmed the incident. He added that girl’s mother reported the case to the police station. He added that the matter would be transferred to the state’s Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation. Abdullahi said, “The woman had raise the alarm and thematter was subsequently reported here. It is an unfortunate incident. “Right now we are preparing a signal case file transfer to the state CID at the state headquarters. The offence was reported at the station last week Thursday. He had carnal knowledge of the girl at an uncompleted building very close to the well.”

Al’Qaeda franchise group blames death of German hostage on his home country

The North African Al’Qaeda branch Al’Qaeda in the Islamic Mahgreb (AQIM) posted a statement online onMonday concerningthe death of German citizen, Edgar Raupach. Raupach was kidnapped, and held hostage in Kano state by suspected Boko Haram terrorists, but was killed by his captors when arescue attempt wasmade by Nigerian security forces. He was shot and stabbed as security forces tried to complete the mission to retrieve him. AQIM released a statement saying that Germany had given the go aheadto Nigerian forces to breach their holdings when they(AQIM) were “keen to peacefully settlethe issue” as long as their demands were met, according to The Vanguard newspaper. Their statement read in part: “We say to the family of the German citizen Edgar Fritz Raupach, the bloodof your son hangs from the neck of your government,” according to a SITE translation of the statement. According to Vanguard, the statement added that Germany must “correct” its handling of Muslims, “because your security and the security of your citizens are contingent upon the security of Muslims and the respect for their sanctities”. It is the third in a series of failed missions to save foreign hostages held in Nigeria, and “This method of foolishness in dealing with the hostages issues has proven its failure and led in all cases to the killing of the hostages and manysoldiers, while the serious negotiationstyle proved successful and led to their release,” it said.

Report: Methodist Church priest found dead in bush

A Methodist Churchpastor at Ago, Otukpa in OgbadiboLocal Council of Benue State, Rev. Michael Ejeh, was on Monday morning, found dead in a bush. According to his wife, Charity Ejeh, the bush was just few meters away from a church he’d visited the previous day for prayers and deliverance services. Mrs. Ejeh said that her deceased husband, who suffered from hypertension, had gone to a deliverance ministry led by Prophet Moses Ujah at Odebe, where his body was found. An informer in the area, who pleaded anonymity, told TheGuardian , which first broke the story that Rev. Ejeh was allegedly found tied to a treein a bush some metres away from Prophet Ujah’s church where he’d gone to the bush to ease himself. The Guardian also gathered that Rev. Ejeh, after the prayers on the fateful night had requested to sleepin Odeba, as it waslate for him to return to his base,Ago. Ujah reportedly accepted to host the late reverend and directed two ofhis pastors to keep the priest’s company through the night at the ministry’s office. The remains of thelate priest have been deposited at a mortuary in Otukpa while the police have arrested Ujah for questioning. Meanwhile, the Benue Police public relations officer, Philip Agena, said he hasn’t been briefed on the incident.

Bomb explosions in Borno Kills seven

Just 48 hours afterthe Joint Task Force (JTF) launched an assault against Boko Haram in Maiduguri, engaging the religious sect in a gun fight for hours, there was another series of bomb explosions inthe Borno State capital. At least seven people havedied as a result of the explosions. In the first explosion which occurred between 7am and 8.15am around Gidan Dambe area of Maiduguri, only onelife, that of the suicide bomber, was lost. Witnesses say, theimprovised explosive device (IED) which he was trying to plant, exploded accidentally, killing him in the process. The second blast, however, was more deadly and took place at the Borno State Police Headquarters where a suicide bomber struck, killing six persons,two policemen and four civilians. A police source said the suicide carbomber believed tobe a member of thedreaded Boko Haram sect attempted to force his way into the state headquartersthrough the main gate with a car laden with explosive devices. The source said the bomb went off while policemen on guard at the gate were preventing the bomber from entering. Unfortunately, although the bomber was killed, the explosive still went off. Friday’s attack is the second time a suicide bomber attack would targetthe state police headquarters. The first attempt was made last year in August. It is also the second blast inthe month of June, after that of June 2in Bauchi. Boko Haram claimed responsibility for that attack. A Joint Task Force official, who later spoke to newsmen concerning the earlier blast, said that the IED was concealed in a bag and kept under a public shed and exploded while the suicide bomber wastrying to plant it. “There was an explosion in an area of Maiduguri this morning and our men were immediately deployed to the area,” Col. Victor Ebhaleme, the field operations officer of the task force told newsmen. “They found a manwe believe to be a member of Boko Haram, dismembered by the explosion. Preliminary investigation has shown that he was killed when he was trying to plant the device.”

Suicide bomber attacks police command, kills 5

Five persons were feared killed in a suicide attack on the Borno State Police Command Headquarters in Maiduguri on Friday. A suicide bomber had attempted to gain access into the command, but the bombs he bore exploded at the gate and killed the victims. The exact number of policemen affected by the blast could not be immediately ascertained. But the police later confirmed that an inspector and four civilians died in the blast. Police spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba, a chief superintendent of police, in a statement on Friday, said a lone male suicide bomber driving a light green ToyotaCamry car, loaded with Improvised Explosive Devices, attempted to smash through the gate of the Borno Command HQs at about 11.30 am. According to him, the attempt failed as “vigilant and combat-ready police officers on guard duty” at the gate resisted and prevented him from gaining access into the premises. Mba said, “Obviously actingout of frustration and desperation, he detonated the explosives right outside the gate of the headquarters, killing himselfin the process and one Inspector Ali Bulama.” He said four other civilians,who were passers-by, lost their lives in the incident. “Three other civilians and a few police officers sustained injury of varying degrees. “They are all responding totreatment at various hospitals in Borno,” Mba added. Meanwhile, a combined teamof detectives from the Borno State CID and the Police Bomb Disposal Unit had begun an investigation into the incident. The police appealed to the public to continue to support them and other security agencies by volunteering useful information at all times. No group has claimed responsibility for the attackbut Islamic insurgent group, Boko Haram, had carried out attacks on police stations in the past.

New villarreal coach dies of heart attack

MADRID (AFP) – Spanish coach Manuel Preciado died of a heart attack on Thursday,just a day after he was named the new coach at relegated side Villarreal, his former side SportingGijon said. “A heart attack claimed the life of Manuel Preciado in the early hours in Valencia,” the club said in a statement. “Villarreal want to express their deepest sorrow at the sad loss and want to offer their condolences to his family and all his relatives,” the club Preciado was set to join added. Preciado, 54, had been due to be officially unveiled asVillarreal’s new coach on Friday. He coached Racing Santander in the 2002-03 season and was in charge of Levante the following season, when he led them tothe first division.

62-year-old grandpa remanded for raping girl, 10

For allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl (name withheld), a 62-year-old, Mr. John Osunade, has been remanded in prison custody by an Osogbo Magistrate’s Court.
The charge sheet read in court on Tuesday accused Osunade of perpetrating the act on May 27, 2012, at his residence in Tonkere village, Gbongan town in Ayedaade Local GovernmentArea, Osun State.
When his plea was taken, the accused pleaded not guilty to the one-count of rape. Police prosecutor, InspectorElisha Olusegun, said the offence was punishable under Section 218 of the Criminal Code, Cap 34, Volume II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2003. Defence prosecutor, Mr. Reginald Ngwu, urged the court to admit the accused to bail, adding that Osunaderemained innocent until the contrary was proved in court. Ngwu, who said Osunade was ready to face trial, added that the accused would provide reliable sureties if granted bail. But the Magistrate, Mr. Olusola Aluko, ordered the accused to be remanded in custody, adding that the court would entertain Osunade’s bail application in written form and not in oral. Aluko adjourned the case until Wednesday, July 4, 2012, for mention.

Boko Haram denied dialogue move throughAhmed – Cleric

Renowned Northern Islamic cleric, Sheikh Usman Bauchi,said on Wednesday that members of the Boko Haram said they never asked Dr. Datti Ahmed to mediate between them and the Federal Government. Bauchi, speaking on the Hausa service of the Voice of America monitored in Kaduna on Wednesday, said the sect members told him that they had nothing todo with Ahmed or asked himto mediate on their behalf with the Federal Government. Said the cleric, “They told me that apart from myself, they had never discussed the issue of mediating with the government with anybody. “They said they never asked him to speak on theirbehalf. They rely on me withconfidence and I believe theFederal Government will notbetray that trust and I will not disappoint them equally.” Datti had claimed that as a concerned elder in the region and President of the Supreme Council for Shariahin Nigeria, he was disturbedby the massive violence in the country. He said this informed his decision to mediate betweenthe sect and the Federal Government. But Bauchi noted that during his meeting with the sect’s members, which was made possible by the BauchiState Government, the members distanced themselves from Ahmed’s claim. The cleric claimed that the government was being represented by Alhaji Hassan Tukur from the Presidency while he was mandated by the sect members to mediate on theirbehalf with the Federal Government. Meanwhile, the Kaduna State Government on Wednesday warned a Christian group parading themselves as a militia group to steer clear from any act capable of disrupting the relative peace in the state. The Special Adviser, Christian Matters to Governor Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa, Rev. Joseph Hayab, lamented the intention of the group to wage a war against non-Christians in the southern part of the state, saying Christianity did not habour killings. Hayab said, “Within the week there was a statementgoing round within Kaduna State and the nation at large by a group ‘Akwat Akwop’, who in their statement gave one week ultimatum to Fulani
herdsmen to leave the whole of Southern Kaduna or face spontaneous attacks by the militant sect of the said organisation who were presented as Christian militias.”

Police uncover bomb in UNIJOS

The police in Plateau State on Monday confirmed that two bombs were discoveredin the premises of a hostel at the University of Jos on Sunday. The Police Commissioner, MrEmmanuel Ayeni, said the officers were able to detonate one of the bombs while the second exploded, injuring no person. He said, “When my officers and men with the Anti-Bomb Squad arrived in the scene,they were able to detonate the second bomb and luckily, the one that exploded did not harm anybody or cause damage to the hostel block.’’ Ayeni said although the police had begun investigation, no suspect had been arrested, describing the incident as criminal. He said the bombs were locally made, promising that the planters would be foundand brought to judgment. He called on students and members of the university community to go about their normal activities as the police were on top of the situation. A security officer with the university’s Intelligence Unit, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that the unit received an emergency call on the development at about 8.00 p.m. and subsequently, invited the police. “The bomb exploded was planted behind a hostel block while the one that the police detonated was planted beside a building. “Our joy is that nobody was hurt nor the hostel damaged by the blast; probably this is because the devices were said to belocally made,” he said. In his comment, the Chief Security Officer of the university, retired Col. Labaran Bature, also confirmed the incident in a telephone interview. NAN reports that normalcy has returned to the university as students are going in and out of the affected students’ hostel for their lectures.

Boko haram claims responsibility for Bauchi bomb blast

Dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for last Sunday’s suicide car bombingin Yelwa, Bauchi State which left at least a dozen people dead. The attack occurred during a church service, when a suicide bomber drove a car full of explosives into a church premises, after forcing the car through a checkpoint. In an emailed statement from Boko Haram, the group’s spokesman Abu Qaqa said, “We thank Allah for giving us victory. We successfully carried out a suicide bombing on a church at Yelwa in Bauchi State.”

Nigerian student receives 7 awards at New York’s varsity

New York – A Nigerian graduate at the Lehman College, the City University of New York (CUNY), Olu Onemola, has received seven awards at the university’s 2012 graduation ceremony. He received the awards during the graduation ceremony held on Saturday in New York. Olu is the son of Bukun-olu Onemola,Nigeria’s Deputy Ambassador at the United Nations in New York. A graduate of Political Science at Lehman, young Onemola received the distinguished “Golden Key’’ award, otherwise referred to as International HonourSociety which is an academic honour society for high-achieving scholars. Other awards are the Pi Sigma Alpha, National Honour Society in Political Science, and The Jacob Hammer Memorial Prize in English which is awarded to a student leading in theatre performance. He also won the Edgar Dawson Prizein Political and LegalTheory which is an award to the outstanding Political Science graduate with the strongest portfolio of political and legal essays. Onemola also received the CUNY Vice-Chancellor’s Excellence in Leadership Award, and he similarly received the Cum Laude award. This is a Latin term that signifies “With Honours”, a distinction bestowedon graduates that fall within a 3.4 to a 3.59 GPA on a four-point scale. Speaking on the awards, the elated Onemola said they had inspired him to continue to thrive inall his endeavours, regardless of any obstacles that mightstand on his way. “My impression is that hard work definitely pays off. Robbers kill collegue in error during operation

The police in Ogun State on Sunday said an armed robbery suspect was mistakenly shot dead by hiscolleague during a robbery in the Ogijo area of the state. The police also said they had dislodged a cult group from the Ogun State Collegeof Health Technology, Ilese Ijebu, and arrested two suspects. The Police Public Relations Officer for the state, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, said three suspected robbers had broken into the house of one Mojeed Jamiu and attempted to rob him when one of them mistakenly killed their colleague. Adejobi, an assistant superintendent of police, said in a statement made available to journalists in Abeokuta, that following theaccidental discharge which instantly killed one of them, the two others fled the scene, leaving their colleague’s corpse behind. The PPRO said the police had taken the corpse to themortuary of Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital, Sagamu. He said, “An armed robber misfires colleague: On Saturday, 2nd June at about 1300 hours, one Mojeed Jamiu ‘M’ of Ogijo area of Ogun State came to the station and reported that on June 1, 2012, at about 1300 hours, three armed men came to his house to rob him. “Fortunately for Mojeed, one of the robbers misfired a colleague of his while the robbery operation was on. The body of the robber hassince been deposited at OSUTH mortuary. “One locally-made double-barrelled gun and three expended cartridges were recovered from the scene by a team led by SP Toyin Afolaogun, DPO Ogijo. Efforts are on to arrest thefleeing ones.” Concerning the dislodgment of the cult group from the College of Health Technology, the statement further stated that the police had arrested a 400 level student of the institution, Musediku Idris, and a female suspect, Bilikisu Jimoh, said to be a “non-student.” The police added that the cooperation of the school management with the security agencies made the dislodgement of the cult group possible.

Bomb blast at Living Faith Church Bauchi kills 12

12 people have reportedly been killed following a suicidebomb attack at Living Faith Church, Bauchi, this morning. The suicide attacker, who was also killed in the blast, targeted worshipers of Living Faith Church, located near the airport in Bauchi, asthey left the church after service. At least 30 people were injured in the blast. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

153 passengersfeared killed as plane crashes in Lagos

LAGOS (AFP) – More than 150 passengers are feared dead after their plane crashed in a densely populated district ofNigeria’s economic capital Lagos Sunday, residents and an aviation official said. Thick smoke was rising from the area, near Lagos airport, and flames could be seen coming from a two-storey building. Residents said the plane had been coming in low, making a loud noise,when it slammed intothe residential area. “It was a Dana (airline) flight out of (the capital) Abuja to Lagos with about 153 people on board,” Nigeria’s civil aviation chief Harold Demuren toldAFP. “I don’t believe there are any survivors,” he added. Lagos State police spokesman Joseph Jaiyeoba told AFP the plane had gone down in the Iju neighbourhood on the mainland of the city, where most of the city’s populationlives. A spokesman for Nigerian airline Dana confirmed one of its planes had crashed but could not immediately provide further details. “I can confirm that one of our planes crashed today on the outskirts of Lagos,” Tony Usidamen told AFP. “We lost communication with the aircraft. We are going to issue an official statement.” Lagos, the largest city in Africa’s most populous nation, is home to an estimated 15 million people.

Violence in Nassarawa: 20 killed, 6,000 people displaced

Over Friday and Saturday, violence flared up in Assakio, a community found in the Lafia East development area of Nasarawa state.The fighting started on Friday and has led to the death of at least 20 people, with another 50 injured and sent 6,000 fleeing from their homes. The governor, Umaru Al-Makura imposed a curfew on the community to cool tensions between the warring Alago and Eggon ethnic groups. The governor visited the area with the state Commissionerof Police, Mr Abayomi Akeremale, after which a 6pm to 6amcurfew was imposed. The Red Cross condemned the violence, blaming the violence on thelack of security, asthis is not the first flare up. During his visit, Al-Makura, asked for patience from the area residents,and informing them that there would begovernment aid to those affected by the clash. Gov. Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State onSaturday imposed a curfew on Alago and Eggon communities in Lafia, where two persons died in a communal conflict on Friday. According to Leadership, the communities turnedagainst each other as the Eggon group felt they were under duressto pay taxes to theAlago community.

Tinubu, Fayemi, others rejects UNILAG renaming

.THE renaming of the University of Lagos after the acclaimed winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, had continued to attract thecondemnation of more Nigerians on Thursday. Former Lagos State Governor Bola Tinubu; Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi; a member of the National Assembly, Gbenga Ashafa; Mohammed, son of the late legal giant Gani Fawehinmi; Abuja-based lawyer, David Agunbiade; a UNILAG lecturer, Prof. Lai Olurode; Osun State University lecturer, Prof. Siyan Oyeweso; and the leader of the Civil Society Coalition, Shehu Sani, rejected the renaming of UNILAG as Moshood Abiola University, asking the Federal Government to reverse its decision. In a statement, Tinubu contended that though the President’s decision to rename the university afterAbiola was welcome, it fell short of what was required. He said, “We must congratulate the President for attempting to do it, but we say-do it right. MKO waselected by the entire country not just by the Yoruba – he was arrested and taken to Abuja. He was tried, incarcerated and eventually died in very controversial circumstancesin Abuja under the custody of federal agents. Abiola’s mandate was a national mandate which he tried to reclaim. But we must be careful not to localise or sectionalise MKO.” Fayemi, who is an alumnus of UNILAG, described Jonathan’s action “as an opportunistic recognition of the late winner of June 12, 1993 presidential election.” Ashafa said, “The timing of the announcement is insensitive when the remains of the VC of the institution have not been buried. I wonder why the Federal Government had to do such a controversial thing in a university environment.” Mohammed said in a statement that the pronouncement was a blunder borne out of ill advice to the President. Like Agunbiade and Sani, Mohammed alleged that the renaming of UNILAG after Abiola by a mere statement by the President was done to secure votes in the South-West in 2015. 99.14million active mobile subscribers in Nigeria

The number of active mobile subscribers in Nigeria has gone up to 99.14 million according to the latest statistics by the Nigerian Communications Commission. This data was collected from Global System for Mobile Communications networks (GSM), the Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and the fixed wired/wireless networks in the country, andrepresents a combined figureobtained by the individual organisations. The statistics revealed that March witnessed the largest increase in active mobile subscribers adding about 2.53 million new subscribers. “Breakdown of the 99.14 million lines as at March indicated that while the majorGSM companies had 94.53 million active subscriptions, the CDMA recorded 4.01 million while fixed line operators only had 599,335 lines on their networks,” Nigeria’s Daily Trust revealed. The number of total connected mobile lines is however much larger and currently stands at about 134.91 million connected lines. The NCC numbers also confirms that teledensity in Nigeria is now at about 70% with over 134 million connected mobile lines, over 13 million mobile (CDMA) lines (4,01 million active) and 2,3 million fixed wired/wireless lines (only 599,335 active).

Facebook to launch smartphones next year

According to New York Times , The World’s largest Social Networking website may launch its own smartphone sometime next year. The Newspaper reports that Facebook has already hired half a dozen of ex-Apple Engineers who had previously worked on the iPhone and iPad to work on Facebook’s secret project. Suspected drug trafficker excretes 58 wrap of cocaine

A suspected drug trafficker,Mrs. Sekinatu Adaba, has allegedly excreted 58 wraps of substance suspected to be cocaine. Abada, who allegedly excreted the substance under the close watch of officials of the National DrugLaw Enforcement Agency, was arrested at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Rivers State. The NDLEA Commander, PortHarcourt International Airport, Mr. Olutekunbi Davies, said the 54-year-old widow was arrested on May 23, 2012, as she was trying to board a Lufthansa Airline on her way to London via Frankfurt. Davies explained that Adaba was immediately taken to the Military Hospital where an X-ray scanner proved that she had ingested 839 grammes of cocaine. He said that 58 wraps of the substance were excreted by the suspected drug trafficker within three days of her arrest. Davies said, “On May 23, 2012, at about 8:30pm, a female drug suspect, Mrs. Adaba Onitemi Sekinatu ’54,’ was arrested while attempting to board a Lufthansa Airline on her way to London via Frankfurt. “She was taken to the Military Hospital in Port Harcourt where the X-ray scanner used on her proved positive for ingestion of substance suspected to be cocaine. She has since excreted 58 wraps weighing 839 grammes.” Davies explained that the X-ray scanning machine installed by the NDLEA at the Port Harcourt International Airport was removed as a result of the ongoing construction work at the airport. He, however, warned that the removal of the machine from the airport would not stop his men from spotting and arresting drug peddlers that wanted to usethe airport to smuggle hard drugs to other countries. Davies said that the machine would be installed after the completion of the ongoing renovation work atthe airport. He said the suspect would soon be prosecuted while the exhibits would be presented in court to demonstrate her culpability. Though the suspect refused to speak with journalists, an NDLEA official said Adaba claimed that this was her first time of dealing in the illicit business.
Adaba had told officials of the agency that she was lured into drug trafficking by a friend at a party in Lagos after she lost her husband.

Masquerade rapes an undergraduate nursing mother

Tension mounts in Opi, Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State as masquerades took turn in the series ofrape stories synonymous with the community. The alleged rape of a female student, Ngozika Ugwu, presented mixed feelings and reactions to what may have bedevilled the community in the recent past. Rape stories in Opi, a community in the university town of Nsukka, have occupied major national dailies, hitting banner headlines, from the three quarters that make up the community, Idi, Ogbozalla and Ibeku. In 2011, the story of the rape of women between 70 and 80 years spread like wild fire in the country, raising eyebrows onthe motive for such inhuman and barbaric act by, especially, youths of the community. Some of them were fingered and allegedly arrested, interrogated by the police but could not be persecuted because of want of evidence. The masquerade Following this development, Ada Enugu Women Organisation led by Mrs. Kate Ezeofor stormed the community for a church service at St. Charles Catholic Church parish, Opi to cleanse the land and the old women that were defiled. Few months later, Opi women took to the streets in protest of yet another rape at Ogbozalla–Opi. The protest attracted the quick intervention of the Chairman, Nsukka Local Government Council, Mr. Tony Ugwu who invited allthe stakeholders in the community to discuss the ugly development and proffer solutions. Though it was later discovered that the protest had political undertone, the council boss brokered peace to the satisfaction of all. The University of Lagos has suspended academic activities for two weeks, following students’ protestsover the renaming of the institution as Moshood Abiola University. A member of the university’s Senate, who did not want to be named, confirmed to our correspondent that the decision was taken on Wednesday morning to prevent the protests from degenerating to outright violence. The decision was taken a few hours after UNILAG students blocked the Third Mainland Bridge for four hours, causing long lines oftraffic on the bridge and other roads linking the busy highway. The Senate member said the decision was taken to allow tempers cool and to give room for more consultations on the sensitive issue. The development comes amid ongoing activities for the burial of the institution’s late Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Sofoluwe. He is expected to be buriedon Thursday in Lagos. A statement issued by the institution reads, “In view of the recent developments on our campuses, the Senate of the University has directed that all academic activities be suspended forthwith for twoweeks. “Accordingly, all students are to vacate the Halls of Residence, latest by 11.00 a.m. today, May 30, 2012. “The University security has been mandated to ensure compliance. “Meanwhile, the burial arrangements for the late Vice-Chancellor will go on as planned.” More details later.
